Nashville Symphony

Creative Concept / Direct Mail / Art Direction

How do you announce an expansion before there's anything to see?

In 1999, the Nashville Symphony was preparing a fundraising campaign for its Symphony 2000 Expansion. The challenge was to introduce the plans to local newsrooms in a way that might earn more attention than another press release.

The solution arrived in a mailing tube. Inside was a rolled architectural blueprint showing the proposed seating arrangement, accompanied by a miniature wooden folding chair. A detail on the drawing offered a simple instruction: Insert 16 chairs and fill with top-quality orchestral musicians.

The blueprint laid out the plan. The little chair brought it to life.

Conceived, written, designed, and produced as a hand-delivered press announcement, the piece earned the intended media coverage and received a Parthenon Award.

Sometimes a big idea comes in a surprisingly small package.
